Question 1

How often do you have a drink containing alcohol?

Question 2

How many units of alcohol do you usually drink on a day when you are drinking?

If you are unsure, check the alcohol content and serving size. A large glass of wine, strong beer or a generous measure of spirits can contain considerably more alcohol than you might expect.

Question 3

How often do you have 6 or more units of alcohol on one occasion?

This question is intended to identify occasions of heavier drinking. It is not a definition of alcohol dependence.

Question 4

During the last year, how often have you found that you were not able to stop drinking once you had started?

Question 5

During the last year, how often has your drinking stopped you from doing something you would normally be expected to do?

For example, going to work, looking after your responsibilities, attending an appointment or caring for someone.

Question 6

During the last year, how often have you needed a drink in the morning to get yourself going after drinking heavily?

Question 7

During the last year, how often have you felt guilty or remorseful after drinking?

Question 8

During the last year, how often have you been unable to remember what happened the night before because you had been drinking?

Question 9

Have you or someone else been injured as a result of your drinking?

Question 10

Has a relative, friend, doctor or other health professional been concerned about your drinking or suggested that you cut down?

Answer all 10 questions to see your result.

There is no magic number that tells you whether you have a drinking problem. How often you drink, how much you drink, whether you can control your drinking, why you drink and the impact alcohol is having on your life all matter.
